Maintaining the essence of Budo Karate within and outside the dojo is paramount. Here’s how we can integrate this philosophy into not just our dojo but in everyday life:
- Cultivation of the Budo spirit: It is critical to uphold the Budo spirit both on and off the tatami (training mat). Budo, the martial way, encompasses not just physical training but also moral and ethical principles. The dojo is a sacred space dedicated to the pursuit of self-improvement and mutual respect.
- Adherence to traditions: We are to embrace and honour the rich traditions, ethos, and philosophy of Budo Karate. Each practitioner is to embody the values of integrity, humility, and respect that are deeply ingrained in the martial arts tradition.
- Practice Rei (respect): Do not underestimate the concept of “rei” (respect) as the cornerstone of karate practice. Karate begins and ends with a bow of respect, symbolizing reverence for one another, the art, and the lineage of masters who have passed it down through generations.
- Maintain dojo etiquette: Every Karateka is to uphold the strict etiquette observed within the dojo, which includes maintaining proper decorum and respect for others at all times. A dojo is a place for focused training and personal growth, where distractions from the outside world should be left behind.
- Non-discrimination and inclusivity: All practitioners are to be treated with dignity and respect in accordance with the principles of Budo Karate. Karate offers and recognizes the importance of inclusivity and acceptance within the martial arts community.
- Lead by example: As instructors and leaders within the dojo, we set the tone for adherence to Budo principles through our own actions and conduct. Through the demonstration of respect, humility, and dedication to the art, we inspire others to follow suit.
By maintaining a strong adherence to the principles of Budo Karate, all practitioners can create a dojo environment that fosters personal growth, mutual respect, and a deep appreciation for the art and its traditions.
